Turkish military movements toward Al-Wattia base..Will Ankara fuel tension in Libya?

The Italian “ItaMilRadar” website monitored the landing of a Turkish A400M (Reg. 18-0093 – Callign TUAF221) aircraft at Al-Wattia military base west of Tripoli; the base that is controlled by Turkey.

Turkish military flights to the Al-Wattia and Mitiga bases are recurrent, as part of undeclared missions to transfer and replace Syrian forces and mercenaries at their bases in the west of the country, despite Turkish pledges to join the international efforts sponsored by the United Nations to withdraw foreign forces and mercenaries from Libya.

The 5+5 Joint Military Commission had previously visited Ankara, as part of the implementation of the plan prepared to carry out the withdrawal of mercenaries and foreign forces, which was rejected by a Turkish diplomat, who considered Turkish presence in Libya legitimate and based on a bilateral agreement signed with the former Prime Minister of the Government of National Accord, Fayez Al-Sarraj.

The continuation of Turkish military flights to Libya comes after elections could not be held and political tension escalated because of parliamentary efforts to form a new government, in light of a remarkable rapprochement between Turkey and the House of Representatives.
