NCHRL condemns attack on 218News correspondent in Tripoli

The National Commission for Human Rights in Libya (NCHRL) condemned the incident of direct verbal and physical assault and ban on work against 218News reporter Ali Al-Mahmudi, on Friday evening, by “security personnel”, while performing his media duties in covering the celebrations of the 11th anniversary of the February Revolution inside Martyrs Square.

The NCHRL deplored this incident, describing it as criminal, through a statement issued on Sunday evening from Tripoli, stressing that “these attacks and grave violations committed against journalists, media professionals, and media and journalistic institutions in Libya; It represents a serious setback to freedom of expression, freedom of the press and the media, and a confiscation of freedom of expression.

The NCHRL urged the Ministry of the Interior to adhere to the law and impartiality in dealing with the media, and to stand at the same distance from everyone, with the need to stop the repeated attacks they carry out against the public and the correspondents of the various media.

It concluded by calling on the Attorney General’s office to open “comprehensive investigations into the crimes committed against the freedom of the press and journalists and media professionals, to ensure accountability for the perpetrators and to ensure an end to impunity for crimes against the freedom of the press and journalists in Libya.
