Western embassies in Libya call for leaving NOC out of politics

The embassies of Germany, France, Italy, UK and US in Libya urged in a joint statement on Friday all the actors in the Libyan file to respect “the unity, integrity and independence of the National Oil Corporation.

The statement, published by the British embassy in Libya, also called for “preserving the apolitical and technical nature of the institution,” so that “the non-interruption of the institution’s operations will benefit all Libyans”.

The embassies appreciated “the NOC’s commitment to improving the principle of financial transparency,” warning against “acts that undermine the NOC”.

In their statement, the embassies stressed the commitment to the various Security Council resolutions issued in the years 2014, 2015, 2018 and 2021.

The embassies’ statement concluded by stressing the need to avoid anything that contravenes these decisions and everything that deviates from the commitment to transparency and integrity, which leads to obstructing and undermining the NOC’s work.

It should be noted that the National Oil Corporation has suffered in recent years from a lot of political strife, which negatively affected its work, in addition to the repeated suspensions of oil fields and ports as a result of the occasional clashes, the political conflict and sharp divisions in state institutions and decision-making centers in the Libyan state.
