EU urges Libyan parties to avoid violence

The  European Union affirmed in a statement its support for the initiatives of the United Nations, represented by the United Nations Adviser in Libya Stephanie Williams, announcing its joining of its voice to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, in his call on all political actors in Libya to refrain from taking measures that would deepen divisions and undermine stability, which has been achieved with difficulty since the signing of the ceasefire agreement in October 2020.

The European Union’s statement indicated that the United Nations’ initiatives represented by the Special Adviser to the Secretary-General Stephanie Williams, and the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, enjoy its utmost support, calling on all Libyan parties to resume the political process led and owned by the Libyans under the auspices of the United Nations, stressing the need to achieve the aspirations of more than 2.8 million Libyan citizens who registered to vote with the aim of choosing their leaders through credible, transparent and inclusive elections.

The European Union’s statement concluded by urging all Libyans who hold positions entrusted with responsibilities to refrain from violence and exercise self-restraint.
