Aguila Saleh meets US ambassador in Cairo and discusses Libyan status quo

US Ambassador to Libya Richard Norland discussed with House Speaker Aguila Saleh the latest developments in Libya’s political transition as Parliament prepares to debate the budget, according to the ambassador’s tweets.

Norland reiterated, during his meeting on Sunday with Parliament Speaker Aguila Saleh in Cairo, “the commitment of the United States to support a mechanism led by Libya to manage oil revenues in a way that promotes maximum transparency and cooperation between all political forces in the country, in addition to facilitating an early agreement on a path for parliamentary and presidential elections as soon as possible.”

For his part, Saleh reaffirmed the Parliament’s participation in the constitutional talks with the High Council of State, which are scheduled to resume in Cairo on May 15, with the facilitation of the Special Adviser to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Stephanie Williams.

Norland concluded in his tweets that the national elections are necessary to legitimize the Libyan political institutions and leadership in the eyes of the Libyan people and the world.
