Borrell welcomes Security Council’s extension of arms ban on Libya

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, welcomed the renewal of the Security Council resolution on the UN arms embargo on Libya.

Borrell confirmed on Twitter that this renewal reflects recognition of the contribution of Operation IRINI to restoring peace and stability in Libya.

Josep Borrell added that the European Union with this contribution is the only international body that examines suspicious ships to prevent the flow of weapons into the country.

The UN Security Council voted – on Friday – on a resolution extending IRINI’s authorization to inspect off the Libyan coast of ships suspected of being involved in violating the arms embargo in force since 2011.

The Russian representative to the Security Council abstained from voting on the extension  resolution because of what he called “the stranglehold imposed by the European Union on the ship inspection regime.”
