UN concerned about clashes in Tripoli, calls for restraint

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) expressed its deep concern about the armed clashes that took place in Tripoli on Friday evening, considering that they come at a very sensitive period and in light of widespread polarization at the political level.

UNSMIL noted that these clashes, along with the mobilization of armed groups in the areas surrounding Tripoli, put civilian lives at risk.

UNSMIL confirmed in a statement that the United Nations, international partners and the relevant Libyan parties are making huge efforts to resolve the situation, including talks aimed at setting a constitutional basis through which national elections can be organized at the earliest opportunity.

It also appealed to the Libyan security and political parties to exercise the utmost restraint, to display the qualities of responsible leadership, and to resolve all disputes through dialogue; whether at the local or international levels.

UNSMIL commended the efforts of all Libyan notables and parties who worked to defuse the current tension and resolve the existing political crisis.
