Attackers of Foreign Affairs Ministry hold African nationality: police

The three assailants who attacked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tripoli Tuesday hold African nationalities, and no organization or entity has claimed responsibility thus far, said Minister of Interior Fathi Bashagha.

“Since I assumed the position two months ago, the Minister of Interior’s store is empty, hindering it from carrying its duties satisfactorily as there are no weapons and no mechanisms. Only human cadres, who are already striving to fulfill their assigned role under these difficult circumstances, are found,” Bashagha said.

The attack killed two persons and injured more than 18, according to the most recent reports.

Although new security arrangements were adopted by Head of Presidency Council Faiez Sarraj, the measures to implement them proceed very slowly, Bashagha added.

He described the security situation in Tripoli as “chaotic,” rendering the Ministry of Interior unable to apply the security arrangements despite the efficiency of the ministry and its security bodies.

He expressed his concern toward the “chaotic” situation in Tripoli, calling on all officials and citizens to “bear responsibility” and end the division between rival parties over power, a situation exploited by terrorist groups to destabilize Libya.

He concluded that the Ministry of Interior will form a new general directorate of security services to combat terrorism and achieve security in Libya.

Further, he denounced the intelligence of some countries that support armed groups in Libya, without naming any of which.
