Greek METKA to build 750-MW power plant in Tobruk

The construction of a m power plant with a capacity of 750 MW in the eastern Libyan city of Tobruk will begin in April, Greece’s METKA has announced.

Libyan ambassador to Athens Mohamed Yunus held a meeting on Thursday with the members of Tobruk Municipality Council and representatives of METKA to discuss the procedures of building and operating the new plant.

In August 2018, the General Electricity Company (GECOL) signed a $370-million contract with METKA to build the plant.

METKA is the business unit of the Greek company Mytilineos, undertaking the construction of large-scale projects in the sectors of energy, infrastructure, and defense.

The company did not reveal how long the project will take to be completed, however, they said the first generating unit will start functioning in a “record time.”

Libyan cities suffer daily power blackouts that last for as long as eight hours a day, according to GECOL.
